Published September 29th – Updated to October 3rd to reflect common questions
Q: Why are you changing the Powerlifting class?
A: Ascent has grown and evolved, and our current Powerlifting class is no longer best serving its purpose. We want to keep introducing new members to lifting while also giving advanced lifters the coaching and attention they need to progress safely. This plan allows us to offer more opportunities for members to lift with barbells, while also creating more focused formats for those who want to pursue Powerlifting at a higher level.
Q: What exactly is changing?
A: Starting in October:
- We will no longer offer a Powerlifting-exclusive group class.
- Instead, you can attend Empower classes with a Powerlifting focus. In October, these will be on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. These classes will focus on a primary lift followed by a supporting strength workout (“no cardio, no burpees”).
- The other three Empower classes — Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday — will focus on Functional Movement & Conditioning: functional strength, dynamic skills, playful movement, plus a conditioning push.
Q: What’s next for Powerlifting?
A: While you’ll still get to train the “big three” lifts in our Empower classes, we know that’s not the same as participating in the sport of Powerlifting. For those who want to go deeper, we’re excited to offer two options:
- Courses — We’re bringing back the course format, with both 101- and 201-level Powerlifting options. These will provide structured learning and progressive training in a group setting.
*We’re currently developing both Powerlifting 101 and Powerlifting 201 courses. We’ll share more details soon, including timing and how to sign up. - Team Training — For those with goals like competing in meets or chasing new PRs, Team Training offers individualized programming and more dedicated coaching. This format gives us the time and focus to refine technique and build toward your specific goals in a small group environment.
Q: What is Team Training and who is it for?
A: T Team Training is small-group, individualized programming for members who want more coaching attention — whether that’s for injury recovery, special circumstances, or performance goals.
- The coach will design a personalized plan tailored to your needs.
- Groups are capped at four, meaning plenty of time to refine technique and receive support.
Q: Is Team Training more expensive?
A: Yes, Team Training costs more than group classes — but it’s an incredible value. You get personalized programming and close coaching in a small group setting, without the cost of one-on-one training.
- Choose 1–3 Team sessions per week, plus 2 group classes to balance your training
- You can also shift your focus over time as your goals evolve.
- Pricing:
- 1x/week = $158 biweekly
- 2x/week = $226 biweekly
Q: Will I still get a full-body workout?
A: Absolutely! Every class — whether focused on strength, functional movement, or conditioning — is designed to train your whole body.
Q Will I still get to powerlift if I don’t join team training?
A: Yes. You can attend any Empower class on Monday, Tuesday, or Friday to focus on Powerlifting and other strength skills. In fact, this change makes it easier to get into the classes you want, since they’ll be consistently scheduled.
Q. Can I still lift with the crew?
A: Yes! Want to still lift with the same buddies you have been lifting with? Then keep coming at the same time! Or Plan a different class to attend together.
Q: How will safety be ensured during classes?
A: Safety is a top priority. Measures include:
- Additional training for coaches
- Tape on the floor for proper spacing
- Safety bars on racks
- Monthly Safety Classes to teach proper barbell technique and improve lifting culture
- Scaled programming so you can work at an appropriate load
Q: Will the schedule ever change?
A: The new schedule will stay consistent so you can plan your training. At the end of the year, we’ll reassess whether to continue with a fixed schedule or return to a rotating one. Any changes will be communicated in advance.
Q: How did the Powerlifting class come to be?
A: No one has actually asked this, but we’d love to share the story. Back in 2021, when we were finding ways to return to the gym with smaller groups, Powerlifting was one of the first courses we offered. Luca was missing the community and came up with the idea of hosting a “for fun” lifting meet. That first year, 12 people showed up. Last year, our Ugly Sweater Meet drew 30 lifters, and this summer we had 19 bench pressers at the Gaymes! Since then, about 35 members have regularly participated in our Powerlifting class.
Some of you have even stepped into competitions — something we never imagined at the start! That’s been incredible to see, and it’s also shown us how the demand has grown and changed. Our original goal was simply to introduce Powerlifting as a fun, empowering activity. Now we also have members who want to pursue it at a higher level, and we’re excited to support both.
At Ascent, our vision is to empower people to move with joy. Creating an inclusive, supportive space where all members can explore movement is our top priority. Powerlifting has become a meaningful part of that for many of you, and we’re committed to continuing to offer it in a way that’s both accessible to beginners and supportive for lifters who want to push further.
We know we’re not a “Powerlifting gym” — and that’s okay. What we are is a place where people who might not feel welcomed in traditional lifting spaces can find community, discover their strength, and lift heavy with joy.
