Movement Achievements & Highlights

When I was young and a little reckless, I attended and made it through a 1-hour silent, seated meditation (this was a big accomplishment for me!) Nowadays, I know that I am more successful with moving meditation practices.

About Emily

I’ve been practicing yoga for 15+ years. In that time I’ve personally transitioned from enjoying very rigorous vinyasa practices, to appreciating slower hatha yoga. I have found many mental, spiritual, and physical benefits from practicing yoga and I love to share these practices with the Tacoma community.

When I was training to become a yoga teacher, it was important for me to train at a studio that didn’t focus on physical ability and achieving certain postures, but instead on working with the body as it is. The style of yoga I teach comes through the Kripalu and Hatha lineages, and I am proud to teach chair and mat yoga. I typically market my classes as “gentle yoga,” because the sequences I teach are slow and accessible for a wide variety of abilities.  My students vary widely in age and ability, and I am trained in working with folks living with osteoporosis, hip replacements, and other conditions that can benefit from yoga.

Motivation

As a non-binary and queer person, I love teaching at Ascent and supporting my community in this way. I enjoy supporting my students in regulating and relaxing their bodies and nervous systems. My greatest joy is helping folks who have felt excluded or othered in yoga classes, to feel a sense of ease and connection in my classes.
